MEXICO CITY (AP) — Piero Jincapie of Ecuador became the second player to receive a red card at the tournament. World Championship under New FIFA rule this requires a player to be ejected for covering his mouth during a confrontational conversation with an opponent.
Hincapie was sent off in the 95th minute. Ecuador lost to Mexico 2:0. Tuesday, 1/16 finals. He was shown a red card after an exchange with Mexico striker Santi Jimenez.
FIFA has introduced a new rule banning players from covering their mouths to make offensive comments about their opponents.
Paraguay Miguel Almiron was the first player to be punished under the new rule when he was sent off in a group stage match against Turkey last week.
While Ecuador’s tournament is completed, Jincapie will be suspended for the team’s next international match.
