England will make a belated decision on whether Declan Rice is ready to start the World Cup semi-final against Argentina.
There is optimism that the Arsenal midfielder will be able to get rid of the effects of the illness and play on Wednesday.
Ahead of Saturday’s quarterfinal win over Norway in Miami, Rice fell ill and was substituted at half-time.
Head coach Thomas Tuchel subsequently revealed that Rice spent three days in bed before the match, which England won 2-1 after extra time.
It is understood Rice has not yet fully recovered from the illness he picked up in Mexico, where England beat the hosts 3-2 in the last 16, but his condition has improved markedly over the past 48 hours.
Rice will almost certainly be deemed fit for the semi-finals given the scale of the event, but given the severity of the illness, English doctors are expected to be late in announcing his availability.
In addition to recovering from the illness, Rice also suffered for several months from a nerve disorder that affected his lower back and hamstrings.
The midfielder, who has 78 caps to his name, has started all but one of England’s World Cup games so far, missing the 2-0 group stage win over Panama due to an injury flare-up.
